Unfortunately, like many things, losing eyebrow hair is an inevitable part of getting older. As we age, our hair, including eyebrows and lashes, lose their fullness, length and color.
However, aging is not the only cause of losing eyebrow hair. Other factors can contribute, such as nutritional deficiencies, thyroid conditions, hormonal changes, medications, prior procedures and inflammatory skin conditions such as alopecia areata.
The treatment for losing eyebrow hair depends on the cause. Often there is more than one contributing factor. It is important to correct any known underlying issue first. For example, addressing any thyroid problems or nutritional deficiencies. It is important to keep in mind that plucking or waxing eyebrow hair too frequently or aggressively can result in permanent damage to the hair follicle and inability to regrow hair in the future.
Some of our favorite products at Kirsch Dermatology are NeuBrow, GrandeBROW and Rapidlash. All of these products contain prostaglandin analogs, which is also the key ingredient in the prescription eyelash treatment Latisse (can use off-label on the eyebrows with an eyebrow brush). There is some controversy around these products. Rarely prostaglandin analogues have been found to darken the eyelid skin and the color of the iris in people with light brown or hazel eyes. This is less of a concern when applying these treatments to the eyebrows as opposed to the eyelashes. Topical minoxidil (brand name Rogaine), microneedling and platelet-rich plasma have also been found to stimulate hair growth.
Microblading can be a good option but has a high initial cost of $800-$1000 and requires at least yearly maintenance. Keep in mind that unlike an eyebrow pencil, microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo procedure. This carries risks if you are unhappy with the result. Brow lamination is used to smooth out eyebrow hairs, and also lifts them in a more vertical direction giving the appearance of greater fullness. It lasts about 6 weeks. Excellent powder and eyebrow pencils are available from Anastasia Beverly Hills, Charlotte Tilbury and Jane Iredale.
