Resurfacing Laser Treatments in Naples, FL

At Kirsch Dermatology, we understand the importance of achieving healthy, youthful skin. Our state-of-the-art resurfacing laser treatments are designed to rejuvenate your skin, address various skin concerns, and restore your natural beauty. Our skilled team of professionals is dedicated to providing safe, effective, and tailored solutions for each individual’s unique needs.

Laser resurfacing offers fantastic facial skin rejuvenation for skin that has been damaged by aging, sun exposure, and environmental toxins. By stimulating skin rejuvenation, Resurfacing Laser treatment can minimize wrinkles, discoloration, and scars to give your skin a smoother, tighter, healthier, and more youthful appearance.

At Kirsch Dermatology, we offer two types of resurfacing laser treatments, which type is best for your skin will be decided by the provider.

Type 1: The Sciton Contour Erbium TRL Resurfacing Laser system provides photorejuvenation. The benefits of this treatment include:

  • Improved Skin Tone: Rejuvenates skin tone and helps lax skin to become tighter and firmer
  • Wrinkle Reduction: Reduces and eliminates fine lines and wrinkles
  • Effective Acne Scar Treatment: Improves the appearance of both small and large acne scars
  • Minimizes Discoloration: Removes age spots (sun spots) and other discoloration
  • Softens Texture: Softens skin texture to give it a more youthful look and feel
  • Stimulates Collagen: Stimulates collagen formation so that the skin can continue to renew itself over the coming weeks and months

Erbium Laser 101

Erbium lasers represent a type of YAG laser. “YAG” refers to “yttrium, aluminum, garnet,” the crystal located within the laser. The depth of tissue penetration, tissue absorption, and tissue-sparing properties depend on the materials added to the crystal. The erbium laser differs from Neodymium (Nd: YAG) laser devices and other YAG lasers because it is “ablative.” Ablative lasers are high-powered; they can cut through, abrade, and trim tissue.

As such, erbium YAG lasers (Er:YAG) support the process of removing the surface layer of the skin. In doing so, fresh skin is revealed and a healing response is triggered. The erbium laser also generates heat, which promotes collagen remodeling or the production of new collagen. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen naturally. Since collagen proteins are responsible for the firmness and structure of our skin, the remodeling process encourages skin tightening over time.

Due to how water in skin cells absorb erbium lasers, they are renowned for being a precise treatment option. They can target and remove specific areas of damaged tissue or conditions. The surrounding area remains untouched.

What can Erbium Laser Resurfacing Treat?

Erbium lasers can effectively treat a wide range of patients and skin concerns. “Treatable” conditions include:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Saggy, lax skin
  • Acne scarring
  • Surgical scars
  • Hyperpigmentation; for instance, brown “age” spots
  • Er:YAG devices are appropriate for treating the skin on the face, neck, chest, and hands.

TRL™ Technology

First introduced in 2007 by Sciton®, the Contour Tunable Resurfacing Laser (TRL™) can be precisely adjusted to each patient’s needs. By varying the depth of thermal coagulation and ablation (to heat, destroy, and remove tissue), the TRL™ system may be customized to trigger the therapeutic processes related to both ablative and nonablative lasers and both erbium and CO2 laser devices.

The Contour TRL™ is more efficient at ablating (or removing) targeted, damaged tissues than CO2 devices. This allows for the utmost comfort, safety, and efficiency, with reduced downtime. Such technologies further minimize the risks of unwanted side effects following treatment and expedite healing.

Contour TRL™ is suggested for a wide range of treatments due to its capacity to be “tuned” to varied tissue effects.

Primary applications include:

  • Chronic, deep wrinkles around the mouth and eyes
  • Post-traumatic and surgical scars
  • Dark lesions
  • Saggy skin (all areas)
  • Rough skin texture
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Suitable as a facial and body treatment, TRL™ is safe for all skin types.

ProFractional Technology

Sciton® characterizes ProFractional as the “premium erbium laser” available today. It is designed to provide exceptional “fractionated” skin resurfacing. Fractional or fractionated lasers create small, narrow channels in the skin. Accordingly, the laser energy generated and delivered to the skin is highly targeted. This design provides optimal efficacy when initiating a controlled wound healing response. Undesirable side effects and risks are minimized by leaving healthy, unblemished tissue untouched.

Other resurfacing techniques are categorized as “full field,” meaning they treat and remove all surface areas within the targeted site.

ProFractional lasers are commonly used as a treatment for overall age-related changes and to improve UV damage, discoloration caused by melasma, and the appearance of scars. It is also recommended for:

  • Annual skin maintenance to sustain overall skin quality and tone
  • Pigmentation; for instance, moles, actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions), freckles, and “age spots”
  • Scars caused by acne
  • Collagen production to resurface the skin, minimizing fine lines to deep folds
  • ProFractional may be used on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. It is well-suited to all skin types, from Fitzpatrick type 1 (light, always burns) to type 6 (black, never burns).

Getting Treatment

Resurfacing laser treatment is performed in our dermatology office. Before the treatment itself, the skin is thoroughly cleansed and a topical numbing cream is applied. The laser feels like a hot rubber band snap as it treats and stimulates the skin tissue. Treatment with Sciton Contour Erbium TRL takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes, and the skin will continue to feel hot for approximately 30 to 60 minutes afterward. A topical cream will be applied immediately after the treatment to minimize any continuing discomfort.

It is recommended that you limit sun exposure and known skin irritants for several days after treatment. Minor side effects such as redness, itchiness, dryness, and mild swelling may occur over the first few days. As the skin heals, some mild flaking may also occur; this is the damaged skin being shed from the body to reveal the newer, healthier skin beneath. Depending on the area treated and settings used, full healing occurs within 4 to 14 days.

Resurfacing Laser Results

Results will begin to be noticeable within the first week and will continue to improve for up to 6 months. These results will be permanent, although natural aging and future sun exposure will continue to affect the skin. Some individuals may need up to 3 treatments to address more severe skin problems. Treatments may be repeated once per month and then annually for long-term skin rejuvenation. These maintenance treatments combined with proper at-home skin care can help you keep your skin healthy long term.

Type 2: The CO2 Laser: only offered under provider’s discretion

The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser is a gold standard in skin resurfacing. It delivers precise and controlled energy to the skin’s surface, targeting and vaporizing damaged skin cells layer by layer. The CO2 laser is highly effective for treating deep wrinkles, severe acne scars, and sun-damaged skin. It also stimulates collagen production, which helps tighten the skin over time.

What is CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

CO2 Laser Resurfacing is a type of laser treatment that uses carbon dioxide gas to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The laser works in a twofold manner. First, it ablates the most superficial layers of the skin which results in significant exfoliation, reducing freckling and sun damage, and revealing brand new skin cells. At the same time, it heats the skin, causing microscopic damage to the structures beneath. This causes your body to go into overdrive, producing new collagen (to make your skin more structurally sound) and elastin (to give your skin a youthful resilience). This process helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines, which makes your face appear more uniform and more youthful.

The CO2 is the gift that keeps giving. You will see results at about the 4 week mark post-procedure and continued improvement for many months thereafter.

Benefits of CO2 Laser:

  • Significant reduction in deep wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Dramatic improvement in skin texture and tone.
  • Effective treatment for scars and certain pigmentation issues.
  • Collagen stimulation for ongoing skin tightening.
  • Noticeable results after a single treatment.
